My Cacti

Opuntia (from seed)

I love to grow plants from seeds!  So, one of the highlights of my summer has been watching an Opuntia cactus grow from a seed.

23 JUL 2016 : I sowed some Opuntia seeds that I received in a trade.

On August 11, a particularly eager Opuntia popped its head up out of the soil.  This seedling grew from one of the dark colored seeds, on the right side of the photo.

22 AUG 2016: I can see growth and changes every day.  In this photo you can just see the start of the cactus spines.

25 AUG 2016: Just a few days later and they are much more noticeable.

Opuntia - seedling at 2 weeks
29 AUG 2016: Here is the latest photo - so much change in a short time!  The photo below shows 38 days from the day I sowed the seed.  Only 18 days since germination!

I added a bit of water to the soil and when I checked in later, my little seedling had slumped over due to the porous soil.  I had to add some aquarium gravel to keep the seedling upright.

5 more days growth!
Opuntia - seedling at 4 weeks
Opuntia - seedling at 5 months+
Successfully repotted the seedling at 6 months.

It's fun to watch the little buds develop and grow.  My little "castle" is building turrets and spires.
